Do I Need to Make New Year's Resolutions?

The New Year is traditionally a time for a fresh start, but this in itself can feel like a huge pressure, especially if you are struggling with your mental health. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to make any resolutions, particularly ones which may not be achievable. If you do decide to make some, ensure that are manageable and focus on improving your overall health and wellness, rather than transient or demanding resolutions, such as starting an intense exercise regime or losing a huge amount of weight. Here are some ideas of resolutions that will help you centre your attention on your own wellness in 2023 and beyond.


Physical health


Health isn’t all about demanding workouts or weight loss; slowly adopting a more healthy lifestyle is a manageable way of becoming healthier, both in body and mind. Focus firstly on releasing endorphins, those lovely happy hormones, by engaging in some form of exercise most days. This can include a short burst of energy, such as a brisk walk.


Healthy eating is another aspect of physical, and thus mental, health that is often overlooked when we are experiencing low mood. It’s easy to turn to junk food when we are feeling down. Stock your cupboards full of colourful and healthy mood-boosting snacks, such as nut and berry mixes, fresh vegetables and fruit, and foods full of feel-good folic acid and omega-3.


Reduce alcohol intake


Alcohol is a coping mechanism for many, but it is harmful to both your physical and mental health. It can negatively affect your mood, even making you feel more anxious than usual, and can lead to addiction. If you feel as though you are struggling to cut down or stop drinking, please seek help from your GP.


Self-care


If you make just one resolution in 2022, make it self-care. By taking a little time to look after yourself, you will re-charge your depleted battery stores and improve your mood. Just taking time out to read a book or magazine, take a long walk in a green space, or listen to your favourite music can have a hugely beneficial effect on your mood.
