With the start of a new year, most of us are busy looking for things to improve in our everyday lives. Some may start to think about introducing more healthy foods into our diets, whilst others want to think about how to get active and fit.

When it comes to fitness, it can be hard to know where to start, especially if you are not particularly aware of fitness and the different types.

For these people, a great fitness activity to try is yoga. But what makes yoga such a fantastic way to get fit, and how can beginners start on their yoga journey?

The benefits of yoga

The good news about yoga is that there are many great reasons to take it up. The first is that it is known to improve your overall strength. This is because it works muscles that you may not use otherwise (or as much). All those yoga poses are also designed to help you improve your balance and flexibility, which will help you in your everyday life.

You may also find that yoga will help you if you are looking to relax and destress. It can form an essential part of any mindfulness techniques for yourself and improve your mental wellbeing.

Yoga is also a great way to ease any pain if you have issues within your joints or in key places such as your back or your hips.

The best yoga poses for beginners

The first pose you will need to master is the Mountain Pose; now, the good news is that this pose is just standing on the spot and moving your shoulders in a circle. Sounds easy, right? Well, it is, but this pose makes the basis for all the other standing poses that you are likely to do.

Once you are ready to move on, which we are sure won’t take long, you can try the Forward Fold. For this, you move from your Mountain Pose, moving your body forward, folding your torso over your legs. To start with, you will have to bend your knees slightly to get there, but with time they will become less and less bent.

For a slightly increased workout, a great pose is a plank. This pose is used in various fitness classes, not just yoga. It can be tricky to do, and you will need to bring some strength into it, but if you do manage to get yourself into the plank pose, you will work all those key muscles down the front of your body.

So, now you know a little more about yoga, perhaps now is the time to think about trying it for yourself. It might take a little while to get used to it, but we can promise you that it will be worth the effort in the end.
